Abstract

537,370. Artificial filaments, films, &c. TOOTAL BROADHURST LEE CO., Ltd., CORTEEN, H., FOULDS, R. P., MARSH, J. T., and ROSCOE, W. H. Sept. 15, 1939, No. 25893. [Class 2 (ii)] Wear-resistant artificial filaments, staple fibres, ribbons, bristles, horse-hair, films, and like extruded products are obtained from viscose to which a simple polyacrylic derivative has been added. There may be used polymers, emulsion polymers, or co-polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid or esters thereof, substitution products of these, or mixtures. Interpolymers of acrylates with non acrylates such as vinyl acetate are excluded. When emulsions of these polyacrylic esters are added to viscose they are co-agulated but if the mixture is allowed to stand they slowly pass into solution. When polyacrylic acid dissolved in caustic soda is added to viscose spinning solution, this free acid is soluble in water but it may be rendered insoluble by treatment with aluminium acetate. In examples, emulsions of esters of acrylic or alkacrylic acids such as those sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Plextol," "Igeplast," "Plexigum," "Bedafin," C.M. or under the names Acrysol, Rhoplex, Acronal or Methacrol are added to viscose. The solution is spun into a salt bath or into an acidsalt bath. The filaments obtained may be easily crinkled e.g. by goffering rollers. Specifications 527,761 and 527,762 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the addition of any synthetic rubber-like material to spinnable solutions including those containing cellulose esters or ethers, or proteins such as casein.
