Abstract

537,113. Tampons. FREY, H. Nov. 15, 1939, Nos. 30131 and 30899. [Class 81 (ii))] A tampon comprises a body of compressed absorbent material having a hole axially therethrough and covered with a layer of fabric which extends beyond the end of the tampon to form a tail portion for use in withdrawal. The fabric may also extend within the axial hole. The tampon is provided with a removable handle 28, Fig. 17, for use in insertion. The absorbent material is preferably fibrous and may be impregnated with a wetting or swelling agent, e.g. tragacanth, starch. The tampon in uncompressed form may be assembled by first winding absorbent material 1 on a hollow mandrel 2, and then inserting the wound mandrel into a hollow supporting body 3 over which has been placed a mantle of the covering material. A central rod 4 enters the mandrel and causes the covering material to enter the hollow in the mandrel as well as covering the exterior of the tampon. After removal from the former the tampon is compressed to produce longitudinal grooves by a device comprising levers 11 hinged to a block 10, a rod being inserted in the central opening in the tampon to prevent collapse. The tampon is then radially compressed by means of a pair of dies as shown in Figs. 11 and 13.
