Description

E. J. MADARA PAINT ROLLER Filed Dec. 3, 1956 June 9, 1959 HTTOfP/VE Y.
United States Patent PAINT ROLLER Edward .1. Madara, West Hartford, Conn.
Application December 3, 1956, Serial No. 625,930
2 Claims. (Cl. 29-416) This invention relates to a paint roller and has as its primary object the provision of a paint roller which may be disposed of after use.
The paint rollers most widely used at the present time have an outer covering of lambs wool or similar material which provides an excellent paint applicator, but is most difficult and unpleasant to clean. The cost of such rollers does not warrant their being disposed of after use, so the time-consuming and tedious task of cleaning the rollers is generally undertaken.
The present invention provides a novel paint roller which is constructed primarily of paper and is thus so inexpensive that it is economically practical to dispose of the roller after use rather than to clean it.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paint roller which is constructed primarily of inexpensive paper materials that are sufficiently absorbent to retain a substantial amount of paint.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paint roller of paper materials which is constructed in a manner that prevents disintegration of the paper during use.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be more clearly seen from the following description and the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a paint roller embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the roller.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view showing the roller partly in central vertical section.
Fig. 4 is a sectional end view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 5 denotes a paint roller made in accordance with the present invention and which is adapted to be detachably connected to a conventional handle 6 that includes a roller supporting portion 7 having locating projections 8 thereon and a nut 9 threaded to its free end for rotatably retaining the roller on said supporting portion.
As shown, the roller includes an inner tube 10 of suitable rigid pa er material such as cardboard around ice which there is annularly wrapped a layer of a resilient and absorbent material consisting of loosely matted cellulose fibers 11 which are disposed between sheets i1-a11-b of similar fibers in tissue form. Over this material there is provided a layer of a suitable highly absorbent paper 12 having a substantial degree of wet strength which will prevent it from disintegrating when saturated with the material being applied. Over the paper 12 there is provided an outer covering of a suitable gauze material 13, made of cotton or the like, which is sufliciently strong and durable to withstand hard use. The gauze retains the shape of the roller and prevents disintegration of the paper materials thereunder.
The gauze 13 is tucked in around the ends of the roller and into the tube 10 and thus completely covers the exposed surfaces of the paper materials. Cup-shaped end plates 14-14, which are also preferably made of a hard paper material, are then inserted into the ends of the said tube to retain the covering material securely in position. The said end plates are provided with axial openings which receive the portion 7 of the handle and thereby provide bearings for the rotation of the roller on the said handle portion.
The above described novel construction is sufiiciently economical to render it practical to dispose of the said roller after it has been used and it can be easily detached from the holder 6 by removing the nut 9 and then replacing it with a new roller.
I claim:
1. A disposable applicator roller for paint and the like including a tubular core of paper material, a layer of loosely matted absorbent fibers upon said core, a layer of substantially porous paper material over said matted fibers, a covering of a gauze material over said paper layer, and a pair of end plates closing the ends of said roller and having axial holes therein providing bearings for said roller.
2. A disposable roller of the character described comprising a tubular core, an absorbent layer of loosely matted fibers mounted upon a sheet of tissue and disposed around said core, a layer of porous paper over said layer of fibers, a covering of gauze over said layer of porous paper, the ends of said covering being tucked into the tubular core, and end plates fitting snugly in the opposite ends of the core inside of the tucked in ends of the covering and having axial holes therein to pro vide bearings for said roller.
