Abstract

536,811. Hydraulic power transmission. JONES, W. L. (Automatic Turbine Co., Inc.). Oct. 3, 1939, No. 27123. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic coupling is constructed with one or more rotary impelling vane members 2, 9 secured by screws to a flywheel 1 and a casing 3 filled with liquid which can be renewed from a reservoir 27 with which it is in constant communication via apertures in the driven shaft 8 the liquid being kept under pressure by a spring piston 28, or by pneumatic pressure acting on the liquid in the reservoir. The casing 2 is also fitted with driven rotary turbine members 7, 17 splined to the driven shaft and formed with apertures 23, 25 to permit of the flow of liquid The member 7 is capable of a limited free sliding movement on the shaft 8 and moves away from the impeller 2 upon slow movement of the driving motor, to a limited extent, but returns towards the impeller 2 on increase of speed so as to do away with slippage and prevent friction which occurs when slow running takes place. The vanes on the driving and driven members may differ in number and as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5, are constructed so as to form buckets 46 by forming one side 45 with a straight edge and the other side concave, the vanes on the driving rotor having the concave sides forward and on the driven rotor the concave sides rearward. The concave sides are provided with lateral flanges, and as shown in Fig. 2 these lateral flanges diverge outwardly and inwardly from an annular ring 49, and the inner flanges 50 are formed with bevelled -upper surfaces. As shown in Fig. 25 the ring 49 is omitted and the motor has vanes 221 forming tapering brackets 222 which decrease towards the hub 223. The vanes are plain on the back and concave on the impelling surface, and an overhanging flange 226 is provided at the outer vane flange 227, and an inner hub flange 228 is also provided. In Fig. 30 the hub ends of the vanes are reduced at 250 with their tip ends merging into inner surface of the rotor to form an annular chamber 253 between the hub and the vanes. In modifications the invention is applied to couplings having one impelling and one driven rotor only, and the exterior surface of the fluid casing in one of these forms is constructed with cooling fins.
