Abstract
535,945. Putty smoothing tools. CHRISTMAN, J. M. Oct. 25, 1939, Nos. 28699 and 28700. Convention dates, Nov. 4, 1938 and Dec. 2, 1938. [Class 61 (ii)] A putty smoothing device has a flat bottom to contact with the window pane 17 and sloping edge or edges 14 to engage the edge of the window frame and smooth down the putty, which edges may be curved to form a tapering thrust acting to press the putty down. The line of intersection of two of the edges 14 is used to shape the putty junction at the window corners. Fig. 19 shows a modification with a stepped edge 36 for giving the putty a ribbed section. Other forms of the device are formed of sheet metal such as that shown in Fig. 24 having a U-shaped handle 63, smoothing ring 60 and extension 64 for contacting with the pane. Fig. 31 shows another construction with the thrust portions 141 for pressing the putty down inclined to the surfaces 140 for finally smoothing it, whilst in Fig. 32 the thrust portions are formed by depressions 150 tapering in depth. In another modification, Fig. 38, the guiding surface is constituted by a flat part 178 adapted to engage the window frame 175, the smoothing part 180 having thrust portions 181, and in the construction of Fig. 41 the device is guided by one edge 197 engaging the pane and a channel shaped depression 198 engaging the frame. The construction shown in Fig. 43 has two smoothing edges each formed of two portions 205, 206 at an obtuse angle enabling the device to be used with a reciprocating action.
