Abstract

535,701. Modulating systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., BEATTY, W. A., and SCULLY, C. T. Oct. 13, 1939, No. 27849. [Class 40 (v)] Pulses of the kind utilized in the signalling systems described in Specifications 523,575 and 524,671 are modulated on a carrier wave by causing the wave to vary the intensity of the beam of a cathode-ray tube by which a sound or like signal is converted into pulses. The beam from a cathode 11 passes through a control element 12, focusing anode 13, anode 14, deflecting plates 15, and a ring 16 formed of spongy carbon, to the target 17. The modulating signal voltages are applied to one pair of plates 15, and time-base voltages to the other pair. The beam thus strikes the target 17 for a variable period during each cycle of the time base. The carrier is applied from the circuit 19 to the control element 12 to vary the intensity of the beam, and sets up carrier current in the target circuit 22 so long as the beam is striking the target 17. The output circuit 25 is fed by the circuit 22, and may feed the aerial through frequency-multipliers. Where one edge of each pulse has an amplitude different from the remainder of the pulse, a second target 18 is connected to a further tuned circuit 27 so coupled to the final circuit 25 as to produce the desired amplitude difference. During the fly back period of the time base, the beam may be suppressed by biasing the control element 12 or the generation of the carrier wave may be interrupted.
