[Class 132 (ii)] A marking machine for road surfaces comprises in combination a vehicle, one or more stencil members formed in a surface adapted to roll over the ground and mounted on the vehicle in such manner that they can be brought in contact with the ground during progress of the vehicle and means to apply a marking material such as paint, to the ground surface with the interposition of the stencil member or members. An arm 22 pivoted on a bracket 21 projecting from the side of the vehicle carries a hollow axle 23 passing through the centre of a cylindrical rolling stencil wheel 24. The stencil wheel comprises two end portions 25, 26 adjustably spaced apart to determine the width of the line and bridged by one or more plates 31, Fig. 3. The edges of the plates 31 and of the inturned edges of the end portions 25, 26 define the shape of the mark made on the road. The paint, is sprayed from a gun 33 supplied with paint and air under pressure by pipes passing through the hollow axle 23. Spring-pressed scrapers 41, 43 remove excess paint from the interior of the stencil wheel and direct it into a paint receptacle 39. Further scrapers 54, 57 carried by a framework surrounding the stencil wheel, remove excess paint from the exterior of the wheel. The framework also carries a sprocket wheel 60 and cam 63 diven from the hub of the stencil wheel. At every alternate revolution of the stencil wheel the cam opens the valve to spray the road during the time the stencil wheel takes to roll from one plate 31 to the other thus producing a broken line. By removing the plates 31 and holding the valve 68 permanently in the open position by means of a catch 70 a continuous line may be painted. A handle 65 is provided on the framework to permit manoeuvring of the stencil if it is detached from the vehicle. Two sets of guide rollers 86, 88 are provided to guide the driver of the vehicle along the line to be marked. The road surface is dried by a nozzle 78 supplied with hot gases from the engine exhaust and grit is removed by an air spray 76 and brush 79.
