Abstract

535,141. Polyamides. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 28, 1939, No. 26816. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyamides are prepared by heating under pressure in the presence of water aminonitriles or mixtures of diamines and dinitriles, if desired the intermediate product obtained being heated under conditions permitting escape of byproducts. Aminonitriles that may be heated include 2-aminocapronitrile, 10-aminocapronitrile, and those of the formulae H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 7 - CN, H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 6 -CN, H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 2 -CHCH 3 - (CH 2 ) 2 -CN, H 3 CHN-(CH 6 ) 6 CN, CH 3 -CHNH 2 - (CH 2 ) 3 -CN, CH 3 -CHNH 2 -CH 2 -C(CH 3 ) 2 CH 2 - CH 2 -CN, H 2 N-C 6 H 10 -CN(1:4) H 2 N-CH 2 -C 6 H 4 - CN, H 2 N-CH 2 -C 6 H 4 -CH 2 -CN, H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 3 -O- (CH 2 ) 2 -CN, H 2 -N(CH 2 ) 4 -S-(CH 2 ) 3 -CN, and H 2 N-CH 2 -C 6 H 4 -O-C 6 H 4 -CN; diamines include hexamethylene, decamethylene, and tetramethylene diamine and diamines of the formulae H 2 N-(CH) 2 -CH(CH3)-NH2, H,N- (CH 2 ) 2 -O-(CH 2 ) 2 -O-(CH 2 ) 2 -NH 2 ; H 3 CNN- (CH 2 ) 6 -NRCH 3 , H 2 N-C 6 H 4 - NH 2 , H 2 N-CH 2 - C 6 H 4 -CH 2 -NH 2 , H 2 N-CH 2 -C 6 H 4 -CH 2 -NH 2 , H 2 N-CH 2 C 6 H 4 - NH 2 , H 2 N-CH(CH 3 )- (CH 2 ) 3 -CH (CH 3 ), -NH 2 and H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 3 - S-(CH 2 ) 3 -NH 2 ; dinitriles include adiponitrile, sebaconitrile, and nitriles of the formulae NC-(CH 2 ) 3 -CN, NC-CH 2 CH(CH 3 )- (CH 2 ) 2 -CN, NC-(CH 2 ) 2 -O-(CH 2 ) 2 -CN, NC-(CH 2 ) 3 -S-(CH 2 ) 3 - CN, NC-C 6 H 4 -CN, NC - C 6 H 4 - CH 2 - CN NC - C 6 H 10 - CN, NC - C 6 H 4 - C 6 H 4 - CN and NC - C 6 H 4 - O - C 6 H 4 - CN. Viscosity-stabilized polymers may be prepared by the addition of small amounts of a mono- or difunctional amide-forming agent. In examples : (1) #-aminocapronitrile is polymerized in the presence of water; (2) hexamethylenediamine is reacted with adiponitrile in the presence of water ; (3) hexamethylenediamine is re-acted with sebaconitrile in the presence of phenol and water; (4) 10-aminocapronitrile is polymerized in the presence of phenol and water ; (5) decamethylenediamino is re-acted with adiponitrile in the presence of water; (6) decamethylenediamine is re-acted with sebaconitrile in the presence of phenol and water. The products may be used in the manufacture of continuous filaments, artificial silk, artificial hair, bristles, threads, yarn, ribbon, and films; products of lower molecular weight may be used in the manufacture of coating, moulding, sizing, impregnating and adhesive compositions. Specifications 461,236 and 461,237 are referred to.
