Abstract

Polymers containing quarternary ammonium groups are prepared either by treating a preformed polymer to introduce quaternary groups or by copolymerizing a quaternary monomer with one or more compounds copolymerizable therewith. In examples: (2) chlormethylated polystyrene is quaternized with trimethylamine; (3) and (4) poly-p-dimethylaminostyrene is quaternized with benzyl chloride and allyl bromide; (5) (3-acrylaminodopropyl) benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is copolymerized with acrylamide and methyl acrylate in the presence of ammonium persulphate in an aqueous medium of pH 6.5; (6) polyacrylamide is quaternized with the reaction product of formaldehyde and trimethyl propionamido ammonium iodide; (8) (3-acrylamidopropyl) benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is copolymerized with acrylic acid and acrylamide in the presence of ammonium persulphate in an aqueous medium containing isopropyl alcohol; (10) (3-acrylamidopropyl) benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is copolymerized with acrylamide or methylolacrylamide, alone or in the presence of acrylonitrile or ethyl acrylate. In Example (9) ethylene oxide is reacted with N,N1-dimethyl-p,p1-methylenebisaniline and the reaction product treated with 1,3-dibromopropane, a linear polymer being obtained containing recurring units of the formula <FORM:0769732/IV(a)/1> The polymeric products are employed for improving the dry strength of paper. Specifications 623,355, 637,227, [Group VIII], 709,979, and 711,404, [Group IV (b)], are referred to.ALSO:In the production of a synthetic resin for use in paper manufacture (Example 5) (3-acrylamidopropyl) benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride was prepared by stirring benzyl chloride into N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]acrylamide in benzene in a flask with a reflux condenser at 50 DEG C. and the reaction product cooled, washed in benzene and air dried. In another example (Example 6) 3-(dimethylamino)-propionamide was quaternarized by the use of methyl iodide, 0.1 mol. of the product was reacted with 0.1 mol. of formaldehyde and added to a 10 per cent solution containing 1 mol. of polymerized acrylamide, the mixture adjusted to pH6, heated to 185 DEG F. for 45 minutes and cooled. Example 7 discloses the production of a linear protein polypeptide by dispersing 20 g. of hide glue in 180 g. of hot water and adding 10 g. of a 50 per cent solution of ureidopropyl-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) glycidyl ammonium chloride and heating at 60 DEG C. for 24 hours.
