Abstract

535,136. Typewriters. PALANQUE, C. C. M. Sept. 28, 1939. No 26798 [Class 100 (iv)] A keyboard for a shorthand machine of the kind having side groups of keys for initial and final consonants and a middle group of keys for vowels comprises, as shown in the Fig 1. two groups A, B of keys for initial and final letters or syllables so arranged that selected keys, for instance STFLE and ULFTS, conform to the natural positions of the fingers and thumbs when the hands are placed on a horizontal surface. The selected keys may have rough surfaces to distinguish them from the other keys. The columns of keys are arranged inclined to the centre-line of the keyboard and the keys, for instance MFR, for the second fingers are offset half the width of a key. The columns of keys may be arranged at different levels, the KS and HS columns and the MFR columns being highest and lowest respectively. The D-keys may be slightly higher than the T-keys. A triangular I-key at the centre can be operated by the thumbs, with or without the other vowel-keys. The key-board may include a key for typing a hybrid letter to represent J or Y, and bars for typing the signs + and - for modifying the sound of a consonant or vowel. The keyboard may be used for practising only, the typing- mechanism being omitted.
