Abstract

533,924. Photo-electric control of textile machinery. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1939, No. 24709 Convention date, Aug. 27, 1938. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] Alignment. Means for straightening woven material 1 in motion are operated electrically in accordance with the difference in frequency of two photo-electric devices 22, 30, one of which is stationary, the other being moved across the moving fabric along with the straightening means. Each device receives a beam of light after passing through the fabric so that its output frequency is determined by the rate at which the weft threads interrupt the beam. The moving device 30 is associated with a slotted disc 6 through which the beam passes so that it sweeps successive portions of the fabric as indicated by the quadrilateral 16 in Fig. 4 and the existence of bow or skew in any of those portions will increase or decrease the frequency of its output in comparison with that of the fixed device 22. These outputs are supplied to a valve circuit of the kind described in Specification 499,753 to control a reversible motor 42 operating a screw to determine the pressure applied by a spring to a roll 39 on a carriage 31 which is traversed with the second mentioned photo-electric device. This roll presses the fabric against a fixed plate and applies the required straightening force to the fabric.
