Abstract

533,724. Iron alloys. DANIELS, F. C. T. Nov. 16, 1939, No. 30211. Convention date, May 13. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In making iron rolls having a hard body surface and a relatively soft and strong body ane necks, a vertical mould. having a central chill ring 1, is filled to a level slightly above thi: ring and, after a shell of iron has solidified in this ring. slowly introducing at the bottom of the moulc a different metal s( as to permeate the still molten meta and increase it strength. The iron first poured may contain, in addition to carbon, silicon and manganese, from 1.04 to 4.49 per cent. of nickel, 0.32 to 1.95 of chromium, and with the smaller percentages of chromium, 0.26 to 0.45 or molybdenum and should not tend to thicken rapidly in the mould. The iron poured in the second place may contain a larger percentage of silicon and manganese than that first poured and should take from 4 to 20 minutes to pour according to the size of the roll and the fluidity of the iron first poured. All the metal may be poured through a runner 5 and the sink head 4 should be so large that no metal overflows.
