Abstract

533,647. Making valves. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and GIBSON, J. H. Aug. 17, 1939, No. 23769. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A valve such as a parallel slide valve, stop valve or safety valve comprises a carrier on which is mounted a ring formed or adapted to be formed with a valve seat or face, the ring and carrier being formed with adjacent annular lips which are united to form a seal weld that may be ground off when the ring is to be removed. A parallel slide valve is provided with seats 2, 3 secured by screwed rings 8, 9 in recesses in the body 1 and has circular faces 12, 13 formed by welding of metal of high resistance to wear, such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite." With the faces 12, 13 engage annular faces 14, 15 of face rings 16, 17, which are carried by spring-pressed valve discs 18, 19. The rings, which have "Stellite" deposited on their faces 14, 15 by welding, are each provided with an annular projection 30 making a press fit with the annular recess 26 in the valve disc and having a surface 29 fitting on the annular surface 27. The disc and ring are formed with annular lips 31, 33 which are seal welded to prevent leakage of fluid beneath the rings. The valve faces are finally ground and lapped on the wear resisting metal. In the case of a stop valve having a lid 55 provided with a spigot 54 slidable in guides 53 in the valve seat carrier 52, the carrier and lid are recessed to receive the seating 60 and face ring 65 respectively, the parts being provided with annular lips 61, 62, 66, 67 which are welded together respectively at 63 and 68. The ring 65 has an oblique annular face 70 formed of metal highly resistant to wear engaging a similar valve seat 69 on the ring 60. In either form new rings may be provided after first grinding off the seal weld.
