Abstract

533,454. Tilting furnaces. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., and PRESLAND, C. W. Aug. 30, 1939, No. 24925. [Class 51 (ii)] An electric furnace 1 adapted to be tilted for removing molten metal or slag and provided with a removable cover 4 has a single power actuated mechanism for effecting both the tilting of the furnace and the removal of the cover, the operating member of such mechanism being connected to a pivoted lever arranged to be locked to the furnace when the latter has td be tilted or alternatively, when not so locked, is arranged to effect raising and moving aside of the cover, the furnace then being locked against tilting. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the furnace is provided with a bifurcated bracket 8 carrying a pivoted lever 10 actuated by a screw 20 to cause a bolt 11 to engage with an aperture in a locking bracket 12, 13 when the furnace is to be locked against tilting and the cover removed or to cause a bolt 14 to engage with an aperture in one end 15 of a lever 16 pivoted at its other end to a bracket 19 on the furnace when it is desired to tilt the furnace by means of a power actuated rack 26 pivoted at 25 to the lever 16. When it is desired to raise and move the cover 4 aside the bolt 11 is placed in . the locking bracket 12, 13 and the bolt 14 removed from the lever 16. The latter is then raised by the rack 26 and actuates a rod 33 pivoted at 32 to the lever 16 and provided at its upper end with a thrust member 35, Fig. 4, adapted to slide in a hollow king. post 5 secured to the furnace. A projecting pin 36 on the thrust member carries rollers 38, 39 engaging respectively with a vertical slot 37 in the king post and a slot 40 in a guide member 41 having a lower straight portion and an upper helical portion. A roller 43 engages with a lever 45 pivoted to the king post 5 and actuates a rod 55 attached to a beam 54, Fig. 1, which engages with the ends of levers 48, 49 pivoted to a member 51 on the king post and serves to lift the cover 4. 'As the roller 39 enters the helical portion of the slot 40 the king post is slewed and the cover moved aside. When the bolts 11, 14 are actuated independently, a selective locking plate arranged to slide transversely across the path of movement of the bolts and having apertures spaced apart a distance slightly less than the distance between the bolts may be employed.
