Abstract

533,344. Centrifugal machines. SERRA, F. SALSAS-, and TECHNO-CHIMIE. Oct. 31, 1939, Nos. 29041 and 29042. Convention dates, Dec. 14, 1938, and June 9, 1939. [Class 23] An atomizing apparatus for liquids has a rotating wheel 3 to the central ring 6 of which the liquid is fed, and a surrounding wall forming n toothed impact surface 1 on which the liquid is thrown ; an upward current of air or other gas carries away the finer liquid particles. The wheel is provided with radial channels 4 and a flat zone at its periphery so that the liquid forms a sheet before leaving the wheel. This sheet strikes the teeth 2 and is consequently broken up. The teeth may be parallel to the axis of the wheel or be inclined forwards or backwards with respect to it. In the form of machine shown in Fig. 5, three disc wheels 3, 3a, 3b are rotated by the motor 7 and they throw liquid against the toothed surfaces 2, 2a, 2b, A bell shaped compartment 16 encloses the lower end of the tubular shaft 14 and rotation of the shaft causes liquid from the tank to rise inside the bell 16 to the level of 'the openings 18 so that a constant level is maintained. A helical thread 13 raises the liquid through the channel 14 to an adjustable discharge point 19, from which it passes over the top wheel. Air is admitted to the casing by apertures 10, controlled by a movable band 9, and is moved upwards by the fan 8 to entrain the atomized liquid. This stream is then discharged through a space containing truncated conical screens 11, 12 the latter of which is stationary while the former can be adjusted in position relative to the latter. In a modification the toothed impact wall may be rotated and in another modification successive throwing wheels may rotate in opposite directions. Radial fan blades in the discharge path may be employed to throw out large size liquid particles.
