[Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] Liquid saturated benzine hydrocarbons are made by the interaction of low molecular weight paraffin hydrocarbons and low molecular weight alkenes in the presence of a small proportion of an aluminium halide and an aluminium chloride slop oil. Paraffins mentioned include the lower isoparaffins such as isobutane. Mixtures may also be used such as cracking fractions. The low molecular weight alkenes may be derived from compounds of high molecular weight such as polymerization products by decomposition during the reaction, which preferably takes place in the liquid phase and in some cases in the presence of inert gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Temperatures up to about 100 ‹C. may be used, suitably with a contact time of the order of 10 minutes. It is stated that the aluminium chloride slop oil in the presence of a small amount of aluminium chloride and particularly with the addition of an activating substance such as hydrochloric acid, propyl chloride or tertiary butyl chloride has the effect of a large amount of aluminium chloride. The aluminium halides may be used alone or with a carrier substance such as kaolin, silica gel and active carbon. They may also be employed in the form of Gustavson compounds, that is, complex compounds of the aluminium halide with aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly those containing alkyl radicals.
