Abstract
532,609. Washing machines with closed receptacles and liquid &c. supply encased. UNITED STATES HOFFMAN MACHINERY CORPORATION. Sept. 11, 1939, No. 25602. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1938. [Class 138 (ii)] A laundry washing machine comprises an oscillatory drum with an imperforate periphery and having liquid supply means at one end and continuous liquid discharge at the other end, a partition adjacent the liquid supply end to provide a receiving chamber for water and washing ingredients, conduits extending from the receiving chamber to convey liquid at a uniform rate in all parts of the drum, and a perforated discharge end engaging an enclosing stationary head. The drum 17 is mounted by trunnions 15, 16 in end frames 11, 12 and is rotated in opposite directions alternately by a reversing motor driving through a chain and gear or wheel 37 fixed to the drum. Hot and cold water, and if desired cleansing agents from a hopper 136 are introduced through the inlet 29 into a chamber 30 between the drum end 26 and a partition 27 and passed through apertures 34 into conduits 31 projecting inwardly from the periphery and extending to the perforated rear end 28 of the drum which is housed in the hollow frame 12. The liquid escapes through apertures 35 in the conduits to the clothes in the drum, even distribution being effected by increasing the apertures along the conduits which. act as tumblers for the clothes in the washing operation. Flexible sealing flaps 42 and 53 bear against a flange at the end of the drum to prevent escape of liquid and vapour respectively at the periphery. The liquid continuously escapes through the apertures in the end plate 28 of the drum into a chamber 72 fitted with a sump valve 60 and communicating with a chamber 74 containing a float 93 carried by an arm 80 pivoted on a vertically adjustable slide or weir 78 on the side of the chamber 74 whereby the float can be adjusted for operation at different working levels of liquid in the drum as for example when washing and rinsing respectively. The float lever 80 is connected through lever 88 and a link to an arm slidable on a square shaft 89 and when the float approaches its lowest position the shaft 89 is rotated sufficiently to operate valves for introducing a flush of fresh liquid, or recirculating the liquid back by the action of a steam injector connected with the pipe 76 to the inlet 29, this being arrested as the float rises to its highest position. Liquid is led away from the slide or weir chamber by a pipe conectend to a channel 121. The sump valve 60 which is normally closer is operable by a foot lever 69, which when actuated to open the valve acts through link 134 and lever 133 to close a valve 132 whereby a piston controller valve 110 in the supply system may open.
