Abstract
532,562. Bulkheads. DEHN, F. B. (Pennsylvania Shipyards, Inc.). Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25352. [Class 113 (ii)] A bulkhead for a marine vessel with a metal hull is built up of metal strakes which during construction are all partially welded in position until they are all assembled after which the welding process is completed. As shown, for the bulkhead of a tanker, a vertical marginal strake 15, Fig. 2, is welded to the side 1 and bottom 2. The horizontal strakes 25 ... 25e on one side of the centre line bulkhead are then assembled and welded in succession along the edges J<2>, J<3> ... J<12>, J<13>. Finally the common lapped joint Y is welded. The remaining half of the bulkhead is built up similarly. If it is desired to replace a worn out bulkhead by a new one the old one is cut away such as by cutting it at the line X-X, Fig. 3, adjacent the angles 10, and the new strakes, assembled as described above, are welded to the remaining stumps 5 at f, f, Fig. 4. The cut X-X may extend through one or both of the angles 10, but should not be less than 1¢ inches from the outer plating 1.
