Abstract

531,497. Surface treatment of films. CELLULOSE HOLDINGS, Ltd. July 24, 1939, No. 21483. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] The tackiness of plasticized pellicles of hydrophilic colloidal material such as cellulose hydrate, alkyl and hydroxy-alkyl cellulose ethers, gelatine or casein is decreased by depositing over the surface thereof, from a non-aqueous dispersion or solution, a multiplicity of fine particles of a composition comprising a solid aliphatic compound of waxy character in an amount insufficient to form a continuous layer. Alternatively, the composition may be applied in solid or molten condition. Suitable waxy solutions include fatty acids of not less than 11 carbon atoms in the aliphatic radical, e.g. myristic, palmitic, stearic and arachidic acids ; alkali or alkaline earth metal salts thereof, e.g. sodium or barium stearate, calcium oleate and magnesium palmitate ; their solid esters with mono- or polyhydric alcohols, e.g. methyl arachidate, ethyl lignocerate and glycol monopalmitate ; fatty amides, e.g. oleamide and stearamide ; fatty acid anhydrides, e.g. myristic anhydride and stearyl anhydride ; alcohols, e.g. heptadecancl ; ketones, e.g. heptadecanone. Hardening agents may be added in minor proportions, e.g. carnauba or candelilla wax, methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, cellulose nitrate or acetate, gum dammar, zinc resinate, coumarin, alkyd or toluene sulphonamidealdehyde resins and salts of the higher fatty acids with organic bases, e.g. dimethylamine and triethanolamine stearates. Suitable solvents or dispersion media are mixtures of toluene, benzene or xylol with alcohols, esters or ketones. The particles may be deposited after plasticizing but before drying the sheet material, after manufacture, or even, after the sheets have been stuck together, by projecting an air current carrying in particles against the edge of a stack of sheets. The formation of a continuous layer is avoided by using very dilute solutions.
