Abstract

531,315. Making metal strips, wire, ribbon, &c. MAUTSCH, R. March 6, 1939, No. 7315. [Class 83 (ii)] Shaped products of small section, such as wire and strips, are made by cutting a continuous thin element 4, Fig. 1, from a rotating cylinder of metal 2 by a tool 3 and then passing the element through rolls 5 to give it the desired profile. The element may be heated by current from supply terminals 6, 7 and enclosed in a tube 10 supplied at 11 with hot nitrogen. The rolls may give it a circular cross-section and it may be used as a welding electrode. After leaving the tube it passes through a draw-plate 15 and is wound on a drum 17. If desired the element may be cold rolled to ribbon form. The ribbon may be used for reinforcing packing cases or for making a tubular cover for a welding bar or electrode. In Fig. 2 three elements are cut from two cylinders of different metals and pass through two sets of rolls 18, 21 between which heating is effected by passage of current through the elements which are welded together by the rolls 21. Shaping is effected by the rolls 5. The shape produced may be tempered by sudden cooling. Specification 511,643 is referred to.
