[Class 78 (i)] Articles such as coils of wire A are hung on hooks 12 pivoted to members which are incorporated in the run of an endless driving chain 10 and carrying rollers engaging the channelled guiding and supporting bar 11. The coils are delivered one at a time down a shoot to the lift cage 22. As each empty hook registers with the lift, it closes a contact switch temporarily and starts the motor 26 to lift the loaded cage. The coil tilts the horns 13 of the hook in its upward movement until the main hook portions pass inside it. When the cage is lowered again by the actuation of a second contact switch the coil remains suspended on the hook. Depending bars on the framework may maintain the horns 13 in their tilted position for a short time to assist the transfer. The suspended coil is carried, for example, through a treating bath C and is then delivered to a carry-off belt conveyer D by the horns 13 contacting skid surfaces which causes the hooks to tilt. Fig. 9 shows the means for feeding the lift cage. The coils are placed on arc-shaped rests 31 carried by an inclined endless chain. The weight of the coil rotates the chain by gravity. Side guides 32 maintain the coils approximately upright during the journey. A stop, synchronized with the cage, is lowered to allow one coil to move into the cage when the latter is at the bottom of its travel.
