June 23, 1939, No. 183651 [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulically-operated machine-tool-slide or the like and a speed-controlling throttle-valve therefor have co-operating parts, and are so arranged that the speed of the tool-slide is reduced during part of the forward stroke, and is normal during the completion of the forward stroke and the whole of the return stroke. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a toolslide 17 is formed with a cylinder 30 containing a stationary piston 31 which is mounted on a bed 16 formed with passages 32, 34, the passage 32 communicating with a passage 33 through the piston. The passages 32, 34 communicate with a distributing-valve and a rotary plug-cock 18 which is formed with a through-port 19 and a peripheral throttle-port 32 for connecting ports 20, 21 in a housing 15 on the bed 16. A bellcrank 24 on the plug is arranged in the path of a pawl 28 pivoted on an adjustable support 29 on the tool-slide. When liquid is directed into the passage 32 or 34, the tool-slide is fed towards the right or returned towards the left, and exhaust takes place through the passage 34 or 32, respectively. In the initial part of the feedstroke, the port 19 connects the ports 20, 21, and the tool-slide is fed at normal speed. When the pawl rocks the bell-crank, the plug is turned, the throttle-port 22 connects the ports 20, 21, and the speed of the tool-slide is reduced. When the pawl releases the bell-crank, a spring 25 returns the bell-crank and plug, and the tool-slide travels slightly further at normal speed. The tool-slide returns at normal speed, since the pawl rides idly over the bell-crank.
