Abstract

531,078. Vinyl polymerization products. MORGAN, L. B., MORGAN, W. M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 26, 1939, No. 15790. [Class 2 (iii)] Flocculose polymerization products are prepared by heating, whilst agitating in the presence of a plasticizing agent, a vinyl halide in aqueous admixture with polyacrylic acid, palymethacrylic acid, or a polymeric acid obtained by interpolymerizing acrylic and methacrylic acid with one another or with their esters. Polymerization may be assisted by the action of light, and or a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or other catalyst of the kind referred to in Specification 15271/14, [Class 2 (iii)], and is preferably carried out in a closed vessel, e.g. an autoclave adapted to be shaken cr rotated end over end and fitted with stirring devices. The polymeric acids may be introduced as such into the aqueous medium or may be introduced in the form of water soluble salts, a mineral or organic acid, e.g. acetic acid, being then added prior to polymerization. Specified plasticizing agents are organic phosphoric esters, e.g. tricresyl or triphenyl phosphates, phthalic esters, e.g. di-n-butyl phthalate or dilauryl phthalate, and chlorinated diphenyl. The products may be homogenized, with addition of further amounts of plasticizers into tough rubbery masses such as sheets at temperatures below 120‹C., which masses are suitable for hot extrusion into shaped masses or for hct calendering on to the surface of textile fabrics or the like. In examples : (1) the sodium salt of an interpolymer of methacrylic acid and methylmethacrylate is dissolved in water, acetic acid added and the resulting polymeric acid is mixed with di-n-butyl phthalate, vinyl chloride and benzoyl peroxide and heated in an autoclave which is rotated end over end. The flocculose produced when milled on heated rolls gives a smooth sheet and when further milled together with tricresyl phosphate gives a rubbery product adapted for extrusion into shaped masses or for calendering on to textile fabrics. (2) and (3) an aqueous solution of polymethacrylic acid or polyacrylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, dibutyl phthalate and vinyl chloride is heated in an autoclave and (4) an interpolymer of methacrylic acid and methylmethacrylate and acetic acid are dissolved in water, benzoyl peroxide, dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate and vinyl chloride added, and the mixture heated in an autoclave.
