Abstract

530,348. Making rods and bars; angular bending. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., DOLBY, F. C., and CRAMP, S. G. June 22, 19'38, No. 18152. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a machine for bending flat or sectioned strips, tubes &c. particularly for forming sheet metal frames for window apertures of motor cars, of the kind having a rotary former to which one end of the work is clamped cooperating with a tool serving to press the work against the former, the former is rotated about a fixed axis and the tool under the influence of elastic pressure is slid longitudinally in a carrier pivoted on a mounting which is free to move towards and from the axis of the former but is restrained from any substantial lateral movement, the reaction to the pressure of the tool being taken by a forward extension of the carrier engaging the former to hold the carrier round to the periphery of the frame. The former 28 is secured on a toothed sleeve 25 which is keyed to an arbor 15 and is geared to a shaft provided with a hand-operated clutch and geared to a sleeve 13 driven by worm gears from a motor. The rear portion 36 of the pressure tool 38, 40, 36, consists of a slide movable in a carrier 33 which is pivoted at 34 in a plate 32 integral with an arm 30 pivoted at 31 to the table top 10. The carrier 33 is provided with a pair of rollers 49 engaging a flange 50 on the former so as to take the reaction and to maintain the carrier normal to the periphery of the former. The front part 38, 40 of the pressure applying tool, which is provided with guides shaped to correspond with the section of the strip, is pivoted at 39 to the slidable portion 36 which is pushed forward by spring, air or hydraulic pressure. In the form shown the slide 36 carries a rack bar 58 geared to a pinion 59 on a shaft pinioned with a second pinion 60 engaging a rack 61 on the piston rod of an air cylinder 63 mounted on the carrier 33. The cylinder 63 is controlled by a valve 70 which is normally pressed out by fluid pressure passing through a pipe 74 and is pushed in by a hand lever 35 when required to apply presssure to the work, being held in this position by a spring-retained trip finger 66. In this position fluid pressure passes from the supply through ports 79, 84, 82 to the rear end of the cylinder 63 and exhaust from the forward end of the cylinder passes through ports 81, 80, 76. The finger 66 is connected to a bell crank 65 operated by a finger 64 which engages a wiper 57 on a drum 55 driven by bevel gear 53, 52 from the shaft 15. Wipers may also be provided for operating a switch for controlling the speed of the motor so as to increase it while the straight part of the former is presented to the pressure tool and a switch for stopping the motor.
