Abstract

529,993. Cellulose ethers. HENKEL & CIE GES. May 31, 1939, No. 16040. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Starch or starchy materials are added to the reaction mix during or after the alkylation step in the process of preparing water-soluble cellulose ethers in the presence of alkali, and after degradation of the starch, the mixture is worked up to a dry or paste adhesive. Solvents, e.g. alcohol or acetone, may be present. Starch materials specified are potato, maize, and rice starches, rolled potato flour, and cereal flours. In examples : dry potato starch is kneaded into the alkaline mix obtained by treating alkalicellulose with monochloracetic acid or methyl chloride, and after standing the mass is neutralized with hydrochloric acid, salt washed out, and the mixture dried. On stirring the product with cold water, a wall-paper size is obtained.
