[Class 32] In a process for the removal of water, by distillation or rectification, from mixtures containing a substance or substances with a higher boiling point than water, which substance or substances do not react, or react only slightly, with relatively small quantities of water but decompose with large quantities of water, the distillation or rectification is effected in the presence of an auxiliary substance with a boiling point between that of water and that of the higher boiling substance or substances, and which does not react with the latter substance or substances. Specified substances to be dehydrated are readily hydrolysable esters or substituted esters, antimony trichloride, antimony tribromide, arsenic tribromide, fluorides, mixed halides, and, in general, salts yielding oxy-compounds with large quantities of water, e.g. halides of metals of the 5th group, right-hand column. Specified auxiliary substances are toluene, xylene, pentachlorethane, tetrachlorethane, 1.1.2-trichlorethane, 1-bromo-2-methyl-butane, 1-iodo-2- methyl-butane, 2-iodo-2-methyl-butane, and the extracts obtained from light hydrocarbon mixtures with the aid of liquid sulphur dioxide or furfural or analogous solvents.
