Abstract
529,668. Slicing-machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H. (Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent N.V., in part). June 6, 1939, Nos. 16548 and 26957. [Class 28 (ii)] A slicing-machine comprises means for effecting a relative to-and-fro motion between the slice receiver and the knife, and a rotatable slice transferrer (e.g. a conical roller) interposed in constant positional relationship with the knife between the slicing zone and the receiver to take each slice as it is being cut and transfer it in a stretched condition to the receiver. As applied to a horizontal-feed machine comprising a reciprocating carriage 11 with feed-table 14, a rotary vertical disc-knife 12, and a slice receiver 15, a slice transferrer consists of a peripherallyribbed conical roller 16 journalled in a stationary bracket 20 secured to a vertical tube 21 fixed at its base 22 to the machine frame 10. The transferrer shaft is driven from the knife shaft by a flexible torsion shaft or cable 23, its average peripheral speed being slightly in excess of the carriage speed. The slice receiver 15 is pivotally mounted so as to turn horizontally below the transferrer about the axis of the tube 21, the receiver 15 being mounted by a vertically slidable boss 15A on a sleeve 24 adapted to oscillate about the tube 21. The receiver 15 is supported by a feed-screw 25, which is permitted to turn only in one direction by a pawl 31 and is lowered step-by-step to lower the receiver, as the slices are cut, by the action of a half-nut 26 extending through slots in the boss 15A, sleeve 24 and tube 21. The nut 26 is withdrawable by a handle 29 against the action of a spring 28 to permit the receiver 15 to be manually raised or lowered. The sleeve 24 derives its oscillation from the torsion shaft 23 through gearing 33 and an eccentric engaging a slot 34 in a swinging lever 35, which is fulcrumed at its upper end on the bracket 20 and has a pin-and-slot connection 36 with the sleeve. The conical transferrer may be convexly curved longitudinally, and may be fitted with a coacting deflector formed with fingers registering between the ribs to strip each slice from the transferrer and guide it to the receiver 15 below. The receiver 15 may be provided with a spring- hinged flap to facilitate wrapping of a pile of slices. In a gravity-feed machine, Fig. 5, a grooved conical transferrer 56 is rotated by a pinion 60 engaging a rack 61 on the underside of the reciprocating substance carrier 50. The slice receiver 54 oscillates about a vertical axis 55, and is lowered step-by-step by a doublearmed lever 67, 68 operatively connected through a one-way locking device 72 to a slide-block 65 connected to the substance pusher in the carrier 50; the oscillating movement is effected through a pin-and-slot connection 76 from the lever as the carrier 50 reciprocates on its guides 51. Alternatively, the slice transferrer may be a light rotatable body deriving its rotation simply by contact with the slice passing from the knife. The transferrer may be mounted on a slice-thickness gauge so as to take part in the adjustment thereof.
