Abstract

529,507. Course indicators for sea-going vessels and aircraft. REYNOLDS, L. G. S. Feb. 28, 1939, No. 6489. [Class 97 (ii)] An instrument for indicating the possible compass courses or points of sailing of an observed vessel or aircraft after observation of its red or green side lights comprises a compass card m and a relatively rotatable rim b marked with index pointers b<SP>2</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> and with two arcuate zones d, e extending in opposite directions over the ten points of the compass (or 110 degrees for aircraft) from points p, q substantially diametrically opposite the index pointers. Further rotatable members s, w marked respectively " your own ship " and " wind " are also provided. In using the instrument, the ship outline s is turned to point along the line of the ship's course (north, as shown) and in the case of a sailing vessel, the wind indication w is turned to show the direction of the wind. The rim k is then turned to set the red or green index c<SP>2</SP> or b<SP>2</SP> against the compass card at the bearing of an observed red or green light. The possible courses of the observed vessel or aircraft may then be read from the compass card along the range of the relevant arc e or d. If the ship is a sailing ship, the arcuate wind indicator w excludes from the possible courses those falling within 4, 5 or 6 points of the wind, these points being marked on the wind indicator. In a modification, the index pointers b<SP>2</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> are replaced by a single multiple pointer shown in Fig. 5, and pivoted centrally at h, the arcuate zones d, then both starting from a point opposite the pivot h. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), an outline ship, as shown in Fig. 5, is pivoted in the centre of the compass card, and the rim member k carries a small rotatable compass card co-axial with a rotatable outline ship marked " your own ship " which may be set to show the compass course of the user's ship.
