529,440. Photographic filter and antihalation layers. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Feb. 17, 1939, Nos. 5262/39 and 4933/40. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Cyanine dyes made by condensing a pyrrole compound (including an indole or pyrrocoline) having a hydrogen atom in the 3-position with (a) a #-acetanilidovinyl or 4-acetanilidovinyl- 1 : 3 - butadienyl derivative of a cyclic ammonium salt; (b) ethyl orthoformate or (c) a #-anilinoacrolein hydrohalide, or by condensing a pyrrole compound having an aldehyde group in the 3-position with (a) a compound having a reactive methylene group ; (b) a cyclic ammonium salt having a reactive methyl group in α- or γ- position ; (c) an aromatic amine, or (d) a pyrrole compound having a hydrogen atom in the 3- position are used in photographic antihalation or filter layers. A large number of examples are given, including one preparation of dyes from the following components: (1) N-methylpyrrole, 1-lauryl- 2 : 5 dimethylpyrrole, 2-methylindole, 1-ethylindole, 2-hexylindole, 2 : 5-dimethyl - 1-phenylpyrrole, 1-benzyl-2 : 3-dimethyl-pyrrole, 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 1 - p - methoxyphenylpyrrole, 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 1 cetyl or octadecyl - pyrrole, 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 1 - # methoxymethylpyrrole, 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 1 - tetrahydrofurfurylpyrrole, 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 1 - cyclohexylpyrrole, 2 - phenylpyrrocoline, 2 - methylpyrrocoline, or 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrocoline and # - acetanilidovinylbenzoxazole ethiodide, (2) 2 - methylindole and #-acetanilidovinylbenzthiazole ethiodide, (3) 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 3 - pyrrolealdehyde and the ethiodides of 2-methylbenzthiazole, quinaldine or lepidine, (4) 1-lauryl 2 : 5- dimethyl - 3 - pyrrole aldehyde and 2 - methylbenzthiazole etho - p - toluene-sulphonate, quinaldine metho - p - toluenesulphonate, 2 - methylbenzthiazole - # - hydroxyethyl bromide, 2 : 3 : 3 - trimethylindolenine methiodide ; N - ethylrhodanine, 1 - lauryl - 2 : 5 - dimethylpyrrole, 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrololine, or 2 - methylpyrrocoline, (5) 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 4 - carbethoxy - 3 - pyrrole aldehyde and 2 - methylbenzoxazole ethiodide, (6) 1-2 :5-trimethyl - 3 - pyrrole aldehyde and aniline hydrochloride, (7) 2 - methylindole, 2 - phenylpyrrocoline, 2 - methyl-pyrrocoline or 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrocoline and 2 - (4 - acetanilido - 1 : 3 - butadienyl)-- benzthia - (or oxa) - zole ethiodide, (8) 2 - hexylpyrrocoline (2 mols.), 2 - methylpyrrocoline (2 mols.), 2 - phenyl - pyrrocoline (2 mols.) or 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrocoline (2 mols.) and ethylorthoformate, (9) 1 - heptyl - 2 : 5 - dimethyl - 3 - pyrrole aldehyde and 1 - heptyl - 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrole, and (10) 2 : 3 - dimethylpyrrocoline (2 mols.), 1 : 2 - dimethylindole (2 mols.) or 1 - lauryl - 2 : 5 dimethylpyrrole (2 mols.) and #-anilinoacroleinanil hydrochloride. The products are used in antihalation or colour-filter layers in photographic emulsions. Specification 503,752 is referred to.
