[Class 23] A centrifugal separator, particularly for the separation of cream from milk, has a sealed connection between the inlet pipe and the drum. An annular chamber 11 is disposed about the meeting place of the fixed inlet pipe 1 with the rotating inlet pipe 2. An annular member 12 projects into this chamber ; it is attached to the rotating pipe 2 and has a conical form ; it carries ribs or blades 14 facing an air gap 15a. The under-side of the top wall of the chamber 11 carries blades 13 opposite the gap 15 between the inlet pipes 1, 2. The entering liquid passes from the pipe 2 to the bowl from which the skim milk flows by the channels 4 and collector 6 to the outlet 7. The cream passes through the central chambers 8, 9 to the outlets 10 and the collector 17. When the supply valve is opened some of the entering liquid passes through the gap 15 and fills the chamber 11. The excess pressure produced by the ribs 14 over that produced by the ribs 13 on the liquid in the chamber 11 maintains a liquid seal across the gap between the feed pipes 1, 2. In the case of low pressure working one set of ribs suffices. Leakage liquid is collected by the chamber 16 and passed to the collector 17. The separating groove 18 between the pipe 2 and the bowl terminates in the chamber 19 which passes any escaping fluid by the channel 20 to the collector 17. De-aeration is effected by the channel 21 or by the pipe 22; a stop-cock 24 with ports of different sizes is fitted in the pipe 22 to prevent the outflow of liquid. In a modification the member 12 is stationary and the walls of the chamber 11 rotate. The inlet may be arranged at the bottom of the bowl, and the sealing device may be placed inside the drum. The inlet and outlet may be disposed axially one above the other.
