(Class 83 (iv)] Wire is wound on to metal, concrete &c. pipes &c. by a machine which heats the wire to a regulated degree before coiling. The pipe is chucked between heads 6, 7 and is driven by a motor 11. The pitch of the winding is controlled by traversing a carriage 18 by a screw 21 driven from the shaft 9. Change speed gearing may be incorporated if the pitch is to vary, for example, if the wire is to be more closely wound at the ends of the pipe. The wire passes from a reel 3 over a roller or brush 16 carried by, but insulated from, the carriage 18 and supplied with current through a regulator 25b and the insulated conductor 26. The circuit is completed through the roller 17 or the lead &c. bath 31. The wire is heated to a temperature about that of the bath which effects any necessary temperature adjustment as the wire passes through. The thermometer 33 may be a thermostatic one and control the supply voltage of the heating circuit. In a modification the pre-heating of the wire is effected by gas burners. The bath may be provided with heating and cooling means. In a modified way of working, the wire may be pre-heated above a transformation point and cooled by the bath below it, supplemental heating means may then be provided between the bath and the pipe. The pipe may travel instead of the carriage or both may be stationary and a travelling guide fitted for the wire.
