Abstract

528,875. Acetylene generators. KEEL, C. F. May 16, 1939, No. 14607. Convention date, May 24, 1938. [Class 2 (i)] Acetylene is generated from calcium carbide in an apparatus comprising a motor-driven rotatable drum in a stationary casing provided at one end with an axially arranged water spray injection nozzle. The preferred means of driving the drum is a hydraulic motor, to which in the preferred form of the invention is attached a pipe through which water is passed to the injection nozzle. The gas evolved is passed to a washing apparatus and therein to a gasometer. Means are provided whereby the movement of the drum and the spray are stopped at a maximum and a minimum position of the gasometer hood to correspond to the conditions when the gasometer is full and when the charge in the drum is exhausted. The apparatus in its preferred form is shown in Fig. 1 in which a drum a driven by hydraulic motor g revolves in a casing d provided with an outlet pipe e for the gas to the gasometer q. An opening f in the casing is provided for the residue of the carbide m. The water feed for the hydraulic motor and the spray comes through the feed pipe h to a control cock n controlled from the gasometer board, and thence to the motor and also through the pipe k to the nozzle c. The byepass pipe s and the hand controlled valve r serve to start the apparatus when the gasometer hood is at the minimum position after a recharge. The apparatus is so constructed that the carbide may be charged into the drum in packages in which it is transported. Alternative constructions are described in which the carbide is inserted in its transport package in such a position that a portion of the contents of the package falls from the package at each revolution of the drum. The calcium hydrate is removed as it is produced in the form of a moist soft crumbly mass. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a third alternative construction in which the carbide is axially introduced through an opening in the casing in concentric relation to the shaft of the drum, the introduction being effected by means of a specially constructed filling container, or again directly in its transport package. In this modification the motor spray is introduced at an angle to the axis of the drum. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
