528,710. Making valves. GARDELLE, L. C. A., and LEMOINE, A. A. A. E. May 12, 1939, Nos. 14298, 14299 and 14300. Convention dates, May 17, 1938, Jan. 11, 1939, and April 25, 1939. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Hollow poppet valves, particularly those to contain sodium, are made by cupping a disc to the form shown in Fig. 3, and then reducing this in stages in a rotary forging-machine to the shape, Fig. 6. The centre part of the shank 3 may then be machined to reduce the thickness and the unreduced portion at the end is then swaged to the reduced diameter closing in the end. In a modification the blank, Fig. 3, is formed by closing in in stages the end of a tubular blank and then proceeding as before. The head may have a groove 8, Fig. 17, forged in it to receive special seating material 7. Forging-machines.-The reduction of the stem is effected in a rotary forging-machine having a fixed roller track 27 and rotary radially moving strikers 20a. The blank is centred and presented by a feed plunger 22 with spring centering sleeve 24 that yields as the blank approaches full penetration between the strikers. In a modification the blank is centred by a series of cam-operated steady jaws mounted in a fixed ring supported by the machine frame between the plunger 22 and the strikers.
