Abstract

528,522. Setting projectile fuzes. SCHNEIDER & CIE. April 29, 1939, No. 12910. Convention date, June 16, 1938. [Class 9 (i)] Projectile time fuzes are set by apparatus comprising a fixed base or housing 1, Fig. 1, in which is mounted a rotatable drum 8 provided with a number of internally serrated collars 9, 10 ... which receive the fixed members of the fuzes on the projectiles, each projectile being introduced into its collar 9, 10 ... at a station a and carried by rotation of the drum 8 to a discharge position c, during which movement the fuze is set. Mounted within the drum 8 are bearings 13, 14. in which internally serrated sockets 17, 18 ... , coaxial with the internally serrated supports 9, 10 ... , are rotatably mounted, the sockets 17, 18 ... receiving the rotatable rings of the fuzes. The drum 8 is rotated by hand, step by step, by handles 24, 25 ... , and during this movement gear wheels 22 on the sockets 17, 18... engage in succession with a toothed sector 5 on a member 4 which is adjustable by worm gearing 2, 3 actuated by a crank so that the required partial rotation of the sockets relatively to the collars 9. 10 ... as the sockets travel to the discharge position c, and the fuze is set accordingly. The sockets have arms 23 with arcuate ends to engage a ring 6 on the member 4, in order to ensure correct registration of the serrations on the sockets and collars at the station a, and gaps 38, 40, Fig. 4, are provided in the ring 6 in proximity to the ends of the toothed sector 5, to accommodate the ends of the arms 23 as they rotate out of and into engagement with the ring 6. A spring-urged stop-pin 33 with a handle 35 is adapted to engage with apertures in the drum 8 to arrest the drum in the correct delivery position. According to a modification, the drum is automatically locked against rotation until the projectile whose fuze is set, has been removed, this being effected by plungers 47, Fig. 2, guided in members 49 in the drum 8, and bearing on a circular track 57 which is notched at 58 at the station c, in which position, provided a projectile is in the socket, the plunger 47 is pressed into the notch 58 by a spring 50. When the projectile with fuze set, is removed, a plunger 46 is lifted by a spring 48, and lifts the plunger 47 from the locked position by a bar 55 fixed in the plunger 46, and passing through a slot in the plunger 47. One or more teeth on the gear wheels 22 may be cut as at 43, Fig. 5, to facilitate the engagement of the gears with the teeth on the segment 5.
