Abstract

528,256. Proofing permeable materials; paper ; sizes. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. May 1, 1939, No. 13027. Convention date, July 15, 1938. [Classes 96 and 140] [Also in Group V] Zein films or coatings are produced by treating zein in a dry state and in a thin layer with an aqueous formaldehyde solution, whereby the zein is converted to a plastic flowable condition. The invention is particularly applicable to coating or impregnating absorbent materials, such as paper, with zein, to render them waterproof. In examples (1) a sheet of paper is dipped into formaldehyde solution, dusted with zein powder, and dried; (2) paper sheets, impregnated as in (1), are assembled in a hydraulic press and compressed to form a single homogeneous sheet; (3) a moulded paper-pulp container is wetted with water, covered with a layer of powdered zein and then dipped for a second in formaldehyde solution; and (4) a paper sheet is impregnated with an alcoholic solution of zein, dried, and immersed in a formaldehyde solution. A number of sheets treated in this manner may be superposed in a press and compressed to form a single sheet. Specification 492,652, [Group V], is referred to.
