528,245. Variable-speed gearing. TONDEUR, R., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. March 18, 1939, No. 8706. [Class 80 (ii)] A control mechanism for a change-speed gearcomprises a shaft 1 carried by the steering. column 2. A hand lever B can be swung in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the steering wheel to select a gear and in a direction at right angles thereto for engaging a gear. Rotation of the lever B about a pivot 20 pulls a cable 24 in the shaft 1 to actuate a lever 31 coacting with the operating lever 30 of the change speed gear to select a gear. Movement of the lever B in the plane of the steering wheel rotates the shaft 1 in bearings 3, 4 and an attached lever 10 connected by rods 32, 38 to the operating lever 30 effects engagement of the selected gear. Positional stops for the lever B may be fitted.
