Abstract
528,180. Aircraft. BURNELLI AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 22, 1939, No. 9055. Convention date, March 29, 1938. [Class 4] In an all-wing aeroplane the lateral wing sections B are made detachable from the central section A, which is provided at its forward end with the normal aerial power plant and on its lower surface, with a retractable marine power plant 16, so that, in the event of a forced landing on water, the central section may be separated and maintained afloat. As shown, each of the lateral sections B is provided with four apertured lugs 1 adapted to be passed through slots in the central section A and engaged by simultaneously operable bolts 2...5, which are retracted by means of a sprocket wheel gearing 10, 11, 12, permitting the released sections B to fall away freely. A motor and propeller 18 normally housed in a pocket 17 are projected outwardly and combine with an elevated tail group 14 for propelling and steering the separated central section. Fuel tanks 20 provided in the central section may be readily emptied to increase its buoyancy, while additional fuel and oil tanks 28, 29 may be disposed in the lateral sections B. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, in the case of a flying boat, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), the lateral sections 23 are connected to a central standard 24 erected in the boat portion 26 and are braced by struts 27 which cause the lateral sections when detached to fall clear of the boat portion. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
