Abstract
528,175. Sealing devices for crank pins. AKTIEBOLAGET BOLINDER - MUNKTELL. Feb. 10, 1939, No. 4449. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1938. [Class 122 (v)] A sealing device for the bearings of crank pins having a diameter less than the length of adjacent crank webs comprises members which are rigid radially and contact the outer of the relatively movable bearing elements under an outwardly acting initial pressure, and which are formed with axially self-adjustable sealing surfaces sliding against the other bearing element, said members being assembled on the crank pin by resilient deformation and being disposed within the outer peripheral boundaries of the crank webs. In the form shown a sealing rung 16 is secured to the crank-web 10a or crank pin 15 as by means of a tapered sleeve 17 inserted between the crank pin 15 and the ring, or otherwise, and a projecting lip on the end of the crank web 10a may fit over its outer surface. The ring 16 may be formed from the material of the pin 15, or of parts welded together, or of half-rings held in place by a closed ring shrunk on to them, the closed ring being formed from the material of the pin. Two resilient split rings 20, maintained with their open ends spaced circumferentially by a plate riveted to one ring engaging a recess at the ends of the other ring, are placed in a circumferential recess 19 in the ring member 16 and rotate with the race 14 of the connecting- rod but are capable of axial movement along the surface 21 thereof under the action of the lubricant pressure so as to cause a projecting surface 23 to bear against one side of recess 19 and form an oil seal. The surface 23 or the surface 21 may be eccentric relatively to the crank pin so as to cause radial movement of the surface 23 relatively to the member 16, and the surface 23 may be slightly undulating. The lubricant pressure may be assisted by springs within the recess 19.
