[Class 83 (iv)] An electric but welding machine par ticularly for welding the coil ends of generator or motors lying paralle to each other in grooves and of the kind wherein the parts are carried by two relatively movable vices, the fixed and mov able vices are formed as tongs arranged so that one vice is wholly o: partially surrounded by the other. The movable vice 7, adapted for displacement along guides 15 by means of a cylinder 16 secured thereto, is provided with a fixed arm 4 and a pivoted arm 5 carrying jaws for gripping the part 39. The fixed vice 6, provided with gripping handles 21, has an arm 2 and a pivoted arm 3 carrying jaws for gripping the wires 40. The pivoted arms are operable by pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders 13, 12 controlled by switches 20. The pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 16 surrounds a piston 17 fixed to the part 6 and is normally urged to bring the parts 39, 40 into contact by a spring 19. Separation of the vices and upsetting at the weld are effected by supplying fluid to the cylinder under the control of a switch. The device is resiliently suspended at an adjustable height by a carriage adapted for travel on a horizontal arm on a vertical frame adapted for rotation on a vertical axis and carrying a welding transformer and air supply valves. Current supply to the weld is automatically cut off by the travelling slide before upsetting is completed.
