Abstract

527,830. Lapping toothed gears. KLINGELNBERG, G. A., KLINGELNBERG, W. H., and KLINGELNBERG, W. Oct. 3, 1938, No. 28691. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1937. [Class 60] A method of running-in, finishing or lapping the teeth of bevel gears having longitudinally curved teeth comprises driving the gears to be lapped in mesh with each other with their axes at an angle to each other differing from the angle which they are to make in the normal working position and with the cone apices offset from the normal position. A machine Fig. 12, for carrying out the method comprises a headstock 24 for the pinion spindle and a headstock 23 for the crown gear spindle ; the headstock 23 is adjustable about a vertical axis to permit setting the machine for other kinds of gears, e.g. spur gears. The pinion spindle 26, Figs. 15 and 16, is rotated by a pulley 25 secured thereon and driven by belts from a motor. Connected to the pulley 25 is a pulley 27 connected by a belt drive, which can be disengaged by handle 70, to a countershaft 28 driving through worm gearing 29, 30 or shaft 31 having at its end an eccentric working in a shoe 32. This shoe bears against a fork 34 embracing the spindle 26 and pivoted at 33 ; the fork is connected with the pinion shaft by an articulated joint and reciprocates the shaft, relatively to the headstock 24, to an extent which can be altered by varying the eccentricity of the shaft 31, this being effected by handwheels 36, 37. The fork 34 is loaded by a spring 35. Drive of the crown wheel spindle 38, Figs. 13 and 14, is derived from the pinion spindle 26 through the pair of gears being lapped ; a brake 40, controlled by a handle 39, acts on the spindle 38 to apply the running-in load. The spindle is mounted at one end in a spherical bearing 41, allowing it to be swung about the point 41<SP>1</SP>, and at the other end in a bearing 42 supported by springs 51 for movement transversely of the spindle. A shaft 43 driven by worm gearing 44. 45 and belt drive 46, which can be disengaged by hand lever 49, from the spindle 38 carries an eccentric 50 between which and the bearing 42 is interposed a wedge 52 adjustable on a screw spindle 53 by handwheels 54, 55. The eccentric 50 is adjustable by handwheels 47, 48 to adjust the range of oscillation of the crown gear spindle within required limits. The springs 51 supporting the bearing 42 rest in a housing 56 rotatably mounted in the headstock 23 ; or shaft 57 mounted in this housing is driven from the shaft 43 through spiral gears 58 and carries an eccentric stud 59 engaging a radial slot in a shoe 60 seated in a circular groove 61 in the headstock and secured in adjusted position therein by a screw 62. Gears are given a preliminary lapping without supplementary movements, the mechanism for imparting such movements being put out of operation by the handles 47, 48, 49. Transverse adjustment of the headstock is effected by handwheel 63 which moves a saddle 62<SP>1</SP> to bring the apices of the gear wheel cones out of their normal positions. The crown gear spindle 38 is tilted about the point 41<SP>1</SP> by turning the handwheels 54, 55. The setting of the wedge 52 determines the angle of tilt and its orientation about the centre is determined by rotating the housing 56 and fixing the shoe 60 in the groove 61. After the preliminary lapping the gears are returned to their basic position and finishlapped with the supplementary movements.
