Abstract

527,112. electric discharge apparatus for converting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL. CO. March 31, 1939, No. 10145. Convention date, March 31, 1938. [Class 38 (ii)] In a converting arrangement comprising a grid controlled discharge device, the grid potentials for which are supplied from an impedence network, there is provided an auxiliary valve which modifies the impedence of an element of the network to cause blocking or partial blocking of the main discharge device when a back-ignition or overload occurs. The impedence network comprises a resistance-inductance network 10 and series impedence elements 18, 19, and the grid transformer 28 is connected to tappings on the network 10. When back-ignition occurs a valve 40 is rendered conductive by means of a coil 44 linking the D.C. circuit, and short circuits the impedence 19. This shifts the phase of the grid potentials sufficiently to block the discharge device 21. A relay 46 energized by the valve 40 breaks the circuit a predetermined time after energization to permit the valve 40 to become non-conductive. If an overload occurs the impedence 19 is short circuited by means of a relay 50 energized from the D.C. circuit. The impedence network is supplied through a phaseshifting device 36 which may include a positive sequence voltage network as described, for example, in Specification 161,167, [Class 38 (v)].
