Abstract

527,038. Nailing. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., ELLIOTT, H. E., and BARKER, W. A. March 29, 1939, No. 9764. [Class 89 (iii)] In a fastener-assorting mechanism, particularly one for separating a gang of short tacks from a number of raceways, the separator is given movement in directions both widthwise and lengthwise of the raceways, and the separating slots are arranged parallel to the length of the separator. As shown, the right-hand end of the separator 23 is connected, by a stud 37 and slot 29, to a short link 21 which is pivoted on a fixed pin 19. The stud is held to the right-hand end of the slot by a spring 31. At its left-hand end, the separator carries a stud 39 which extends downwardly through a slot in the usual reciprocating bar 17 and is received in a hole in a bar 43 slidable in a bore in the bar 17.. The bar 43 has an extension 47, a slot 49 of which receives a stud 57 fixed to a second short link 21 pivoted to a fixed pin 19. The stud 57 is held to the right by a spring 53. The separator carries a series of plates 59, one for each raceway, each provided with a separating finger 61, an edge 60 against which the lowermost tack rests, and a tack-receiving slot 63 lying parallel to the length of the raceway. When the bar 17 is moved to the right, to cause the separation of a gang of tacks, the links 21 cause the separator also to move to the right, with a component of movement forwardly of the raceways. These movements cause the fingers 61 to pick off the lowermost tacks, which enter the slots 63 and are carried forwardly until the enlargements 65 of the slots coincide with the delivery passages for the tacks. The last stage of the movement of the separator is in a transverse direction only ; this is due to the engagement of stops 69 on the links 21 with fixed stops 71, and is permitted by the springs 31, 53. The separator fingers 61 have arcuate and straight surfaces 67, 68 which act to prevent movement of the remaining tacks in the raceway while the separator is making its separating and return stroke. Specifications 390,852 and 512,842 are referred to.
