Abstract

526,740. Protective arrangements. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, GOLDE, R. H., LACEY, H. M., HAWLEY, W. G., and NETHERCOT, W. Jan. 12, 1939, Nos. 1085 and 17426. [Class 38 (iv)] Protection against high voltage surges comprises an inductance in series in a transmission line and connected between two electrodes of a discharge gap of which another electrode is connected to earth, and the surge energy is dissipated in a resistance which is put in parallel with the inductance by the discharge. The inductance may be tapped or divided, a further electrode of the gap being connected at the junction of the portions. The electrodes may be grouped around an isolated electrode. Discharge between the first two electrodes reduces the time lag of the discharge to earth. Fig. 6 shows a wooden frame 22 carrying an inductance coil 23 suspended by insulators from a gantry which also carries an expulsion gap 27 through which the discharge passes to earth. The inductance is connected to an incoming line 40 and to a substation 11. Electrodes 13 and 14, the latter in series with a resistance 16, are carried by the inductance and co-operate with an electrode 15 radiused about the point of support 30 to prevent movement changing the gap dimensions. The discharge path to earth may include or be supplemented by any suitable lightning arrester expulsion gap or resistance.
