Abstract
525,939. Carrying ignition leads on internal combustion engines ; two-part couplings. STONE, R. H:, and PETERS, M. F. March 3, 1939, No. 7037. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] In an electric ignition system for an internal combustion engine of the kind wherein the ignition leads are housed and screened for a part of their length collectively in a tubular metal manifold 1 from which they pass individually through metal conduits 9 to sparking plugs, the conduits are permanently secured to outlets 3 of the manifold, e.g. by a metal band 12 surrounding the adjacent ends of conduit and outlet and soldered or welded to both. Each conductor 8 within the manifold is connected to a contact 6, Fig. 3, housed in an insulating socket 4 mounted in an outlet, connection from the contact 6 to the sparking plug being effected by a conductor 11 which is pushed through the conduit 9, preferably after removal of an elbow 16, Fig. 1, connecting the conduit to a metal shield on the sparking plug, the end of the conductor carrying a spring 32 for engaging the contact. The other end of the conductor 11 carries a spring contact 25, Figs. 1 and 2, which engages the central electrode of the spark plug when a gland nut 20, mounted on the end of the elbow, is screwed on the spark plug shield. An insulating sleeve 21 surrounds the spring contact 26.
