[Class 79 (iii)] A "walking" machine comprises a main frame or body A adapted to rest on the ground and having tubular axles B rigidly secured thereto, a foot or walking beam E at each side of the frame adapted to be raised and lowered relatively to the frame, and driven axleshafts G extending through the tubular axles and having their outer ends connected at G<SP>1</SP> to rotary operating members C which are supported on bearings on the tubular axles. In the construction shown the members C are eccentric to the shafts G and carry rollers C<SP>2</SP> engaging circular tracks D on levers D<SP>1</SP> which are pivoted at their lower ends to the feet E and are connected at their upper ends to the frame A by approximately horizontal links F as described in Specification 525,917. The axle shafts G are subject to torsional stresses only, all other stresses being transmitted from the members C direct through their bearings to the fixed axles B. The inner ends of the shafts G are squared or splined and are coupled together by a sleeve H having clutch teeth H<SP>1</SP> adapted to engage teeth J<SP>1</SP> on a power-driven gear wheel J mounted on bearings on one of the axles B so that the wheel J can drive the shafts G and members C when required. The axles B are secured to the frame A at B<SP>1</SP> and B2.
