Abstract

525,699. Roads. PICKETT, R. Feb. 27, 1939, No. 6345. [Class 107] A road foundation is formed by excavating the soil and lining the excavation with sheets of impermeable and flexible fabric or like material which by itself, or in conjunction with the wearing surface, serves to seal a ballast material placed within the flexible container. In the form shown, the excavation c' is rolled and together with the abutments f is treated with a sealing medium of grout or bituminous material with or without a filler. Sheets g of fabric such 'as hessian, cotton, or roofing felt with sisal reinforcement, saturated with bitumen and calendered to bind the sheets, are then laid in the excavation with overlapping portions g'. The excavated soil treated with compressed air to remove moisture, or treated with grout or bitumen to increase cohesion is then inserted in the cavity and the portions g' of the fabric bent over to enclose the whole. The sealing coat h and crust j of bituminous material are then added with or without a metal mesh reinforcement for the superposed macadam or other road material.
