Abstract
525,285. Heating railway carriages. YOUNG, E. M. Feb. 16, 1939, No. 5222. [Class 39 (iii)] A radiator, particularly applicable for mounting below a railway seat, comprises a semicylindrical radiating plate 1 forming the front wall of a casing enclosing an electric heater 15 spaced from the plate 1. The casing, other than the plate 1, is double-walled with heat insulation 8, and the plate 1 may be welded to the top and bottom walls of the casing or may be detachable therefrom for access to the heater 15. The heater is supported by pillars 17 carried by terminal blocks 16 and the leads 18 pass through a gland 19. The heater may be run at about 400 ‹C. and the temperature of the plate 1 may be 80‹-250‹C. In a modification, the current leads may pass through the bottom of the casing. In another modification, Fig. 5, not shown, the cross section of the plate 1 may be circular in its lower part and parabolic in its upper part, and it may be detachably secured to lugs carried by the body of the casing. The electric heater may be replaced by pipes heated by steam or exhaust gases and the radiator may be fixed in a recess in a wall.
