Abstract

525,010. Tool-holders &c. GARRETT ENGINEERING WORKS, Ltd., R.,FARROW, L. W., and CUTHBERT, E. W. Feb. 11, 1939, No. 4527. [Class 83 (iii)] An expanding pad or block for clamping tools in tool-holders or for like purposes comprises elements such as chain rollers 9 arranged in rows between end abutments 13, 14 which are movable to and from each other to vary the distance between the rows and thus alter the thickness of the pad or block. In Fig. 1 the tool assembly 5 is clamped by means of two lengths of chain 6, arranged in zig-zag fashion between an upper plate 10 and lower strips or rails 11, 12. The rollers of the chain bear on raised parts 20 of the upper and lower members. The end blocks 13, 14 are connected by a central bolt 15, the block 14 being secured to the upper and lower members and the block 13 being moved positively, when the bolt is rotated, either by a collar 22 or by the head 18 of the bolt. The pad assembly consisting of the member 10, chains, end blocks and lower rails 11, 12 forms a unit which may be detachably secured to the tool holder by a screw 26. In a modification, any number of chains may be arranged in a radial manner round a central clamping bolt to give expansion in one or more directions. In another modification, the chains may be replaced by systems of levers or bars with rounded ends. In a further modification, the clamping bolt may be replaced by a pneumatic, hydraulic or electric clamping device. A series of pads spaced apart may be arranged to have these damping bolts worked by differential gearing to give a balanced lift to an object resting on the pads.
