Abstract

524,866. Facilitating engagement of shafts, bushes &c. in holes. OSWIN, J. Feb. 3, 1939, Nos. 3588 and 26765. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIV, XXV and XXXIV] Interfitting machine parts such as, bushes, liners, sleeves, shafts, pins, spindles and the like have the leading end of the male portion, or the outer end of the female portion formed so that as the parts are assembled the lateral extent of contact between them increases from a minimum near the end to a maximum at a' place further from said end. As applied to a shaft, the entering end 3, Fig. 1, is formed conical at 4 over an angle preferably exceeding 180 degrees, the axis of the cone being inclined to the axis of the shaft and the portion 5 being left of full diameter and axial length to provide a lateral support when entering the shaft in a hole. The central bore of a milling cutter 6, Fig. 4, is similarly coned at 4a. As applied to a bush, 7, Fig. 6, the bore may be coned at 4a to receive a pin and the exterior may be relieved uniformly at 14 around part of the circumference, the remaining portion 15 being of full diameter. A multi-diameter pin for use on a jig-plate Fig. 8 (not shown), may have conical and parallel relieved ends on the portions of different diameter. As applied to a ball bearing the outer member 11, Fig. 13, may have one end relieved by a conical portion arranged either inclined or parallel to the axis, or by a number of conical portions 17 with other parts of full diameter between. In a further modification a shaft has two opposed conoidal portions 4f, 4g, Fig. 16, with full diameter portions between them and in another form the shaft is provided with an eccentric end 2, Fig. 18, merging at one side 16 into the unbroken surface of the shaft. A groove 19, Fig. 21, either continuous or in sections as shown, may be formed behind the relieved end 4 to accommodate foreign matter which may prevent engagement. A pilot may be applied to the end of a shaft &c. having a coned &c. end for insertion in the part which is to receive the shaft and a coned spigot for removably inserting it in the end of the shaft. In another modification Fig. 26, the engagement is facilitated by backing off the leading or receiving end around a part or parts of the periphery by a discontinuous annular groove 22.
