Abstract

524,624. Calcium chloride. REDDIE, L. N. (Calorider Corporation). Jan. 12, 1939, No. 1126. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Groups XIII and XXX] Coherent masses or lumps of hydrated calcium chloride suitable for drying air or other gases are obtained by flowing molten hydrated calcium. chloride through a conduit, simultaneously agitating and cooling it to give it a mushy consistency through partial crystallization and forming this material into masses and cooling it so as to solidify it before segregation. Finely divided carbon may be incorporated in the calcium chloride as a deodorant for the air for the treatment of which the product may be used. The material from the conduit is discharged into conveyer buckets in which further cooling and solidification is effected, the cooling being effected in an air tunnel through which the conveyer moves. As shown, molten calcium chloride hydrate is pumped continuously and at a controlled rate from reservoir 20 (Fig. 1) through a conduit 32. The conduit 32 is provided with a cooling jacket 43 which is so controlled as to effect removal of heat of crystallization but to maintain a sufficiently high temperature to prevent complete solidification. The mushy crystalline material is delivered from conduit 32 to a first conveyer, the upper run of which is in a cooling tunnel 84 and then to a second conveyer running in a cooling tunnel 95. The first conveyer (Fig. 7) is made up of pivoted segmental elements 78 which form chambers for shaping the material into blocks, the blocks being freed (see Fig. 15) as the conveyer passes round a sprocket wheel 91. The second conveyer is formed of reticulated material which serves to separate loose particles from the blocks. The conduit 32 is provided with an agitating and scraping mechanism (Fig. 4) which comprises scraper elements 64 connected by a rotatable zig-zag bar 65.
